Military engineering manuscripts

South German, 1437; Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek

This book covers several military works, one of which, the Kriegsbuch (Iconismis bellicis), is a variant of a series of manuscripts on the same theme. The captions differ from earlier versions and can probably be ascribed to the Munich doctor of Prince Albert III of Bavaria (the Pious), Johannes Hartlieb, whose authoritative work on jousting (Onomatomantia/Namenmantik) is also included in the book. The Kriegsbuch chapters each start with the picture of a planet, like Bellifortis’ illustrations. The sun drawing here, showing a horseman, can clearly be identified as a picture of Sigismund from the imperial crown, orb and sceptre, and just as importantly the facial features, which are the same as those on a certain type of depiction of the Emperor, the pictures associated with the Vienna portrait.
